Vector Basic Training Book.
I want to apologize for the delay in my new blog being launched. It's been designed for well over a month but unfortunately the developer I'm using has dropped the ball so it'll be a while longer, but will launch within January.
In the meantime as a way to say "Thank you." to those who read my blog. I'm going to do a FREE giveaway of my newest book called "Vector Basic Training." (VBT) I'm already doing another FREE book giveaway on the VBT Facebook page and this one is specifically for my blog readers, but don't let that stop you from participating in both if you wish.
I won't bother posting all the details about the book here, you can read about that on my web site. All you have to do to be included in this drawing for a FREE copy of the book is to comment on this post. I'll than draw three winners this coming Friday and will list them at the bottom of this post.
B Level Acting Skills.
When I came up with the idea for the video intros I didn't think the publisher would take me seriously. But they did, and we had a lot of fun with them as you'll see below in this promotional plug for the book. You can view another video posted on my web site here.
So what are you waiting for maggot!? Post a comment now!
Winners of the FREE VBT Book Giveaway!
My oldest daughter Savannah drew names out of a hat and the following three people were chosen.
- Jeff (No Last Name) This Jeff.
- David Sizemore
- Ronda Couch
Each of you have 24hrs to claim your FREE copy by emailing your snail mail to info@vonster.com.
FYI: I'll be doing a workshop at the HOW Conference in Chicago this summer on "Vector Basic Training" so if you're planning on going I'll be demonstrating the methods I cover in the book.
Thanks everyone.

I'd kill for this. KILL.
I am super excited to see and read this book from cover to cover to learn new techniques that will help me in my daily workflow. Thanks for writing what I'm sure will be an amazing read Von!

Like Nick, above, I've learned quite a bit from this site and IllustrationClass.com.
I rarely win anything, but here's hoping. :)
Count me in!
Thank you for offering this! I am planning on buying the book if I don't win ;-)
Sounds great. If this is anything close to the content/design of your last books, it will be wonderful!
About VBT: If you visit the link to my primary website it explains what the book is about. In essence it takes you through a systematic creative process so you can build precision vector graphics.
My previous two books are what I'd call resource books, VBT isn't a resource book it's a process book. But I have another book due out in May that is a new resource book called "Flourish.Banner.Frame" and that will be filled with over 600+ ornaments, borders, frames etc. More on that later in the year though.
The book looks great - can't wait for the new blog, always inspiring.
This is definitely a book that is on my wishlist. I am really looking forward to digging into it as well as the "Flourish.Banner.Frame" book in May. I really enjoy these books and not just because you're a friend but because they are really good...very resourceful! I'd recommend to anyone in the design/illustration industry!
Darcy,
You're such a suck up! LOL Just kidding.
Thanks I appreciate that. Wish HOW Books marketing department would do a better job, but I digress.
I'm doing a session at the next HOW Conference based on "Vector Basic Training." So that'll be fun. A workshop actually, not a session.
Barely recognized you without the goatee. Book looks awesome.
Saw your presentation at 2010 Phoenix Design Week, loved it — the laughs and the logical sense you made.
I'm entering a comment for a chance to win your book. Thanks! :)
WOW, this is awesome! Count me in! Book looks really cool! Thanks! Greetings from Serbia!
Any help to improve illustration skills is so desired. And a book by you, even better.
Congrats on the release Von! Been waiting for such a book for a long time, and was excited about your decision to do it since it was announced.
Congrats on the release Von! I've been waiting for such a book for a long time, and have been excited about this project since you announced it.
I can't wait to get my hands on this book. Thanks for putting your insight up for sale. ;) Enjoyed the promo video too!
The book looks really good.
I'd give you at least a B+ for your acting skills. I'm a little bit afraid of you now.
I've enjoyed your humor, sarcasm, and challenges to work harder at drawing and less at faking it with a computer.
Thanks for the inspiration. Please stop yelling at me.
R. Lee Ermey has nothing on you.
It's looks amazing Von, and Must have for any designer's library
Thanks
Nate,
My daughters would agree with you! They saw this and said "You look weird. Never shave your goatee again." LOL
Would love to win your book. But if I don't I'll probably buy it.
As a longtime follower, admittedly, have taken some of your processes to adapt to myself, I can't wait to get my hands on this book. One of the main things I'm looking for is perfecting the method of rounding my lines. Great work Von
I'm a big fan of your work, and your books have been a great resource. I was happy to give you some twitter feedback on the some of this new one as well. Count me in on the drawing.
This sounds great! Sign me up :)
Nice! I never win anything, but ... never say never ;-)
Looking forward to getting my hands on this book. Thanks for making the effort to share your process!
Would love to win a copy and add it to my design arsenal!
I'm a suck up. Good looking book, Von!
This book must be MINE!
I want it! XD
Von,
Again, sharing your talent unselfishly . . .
Thank you from all of us in the graphics community.

Best giveaway I've seen in a year :) -- hope I win, I'm really looking forward to learning more of Von's illustration techniques. Recently went through that "Mickey Rat" tutorial on illustrationclass.com and loved it! Thanks Von!!
Looking forward to the launch of the new website and picking up the book at some point!
Good stuff!
Man I am so excited! The book looks amazing and the techniques are exactly what I need to bump my vectors to the next level. And as a side note: I still miss Freehand a little.
Vonster,
I thoroughly enjoy your art. It has inspired me to use my hand drawn art in my designs more.
Thank you.
Brian
I will have to put this on my birthday list!
Nice work. I could benefit from some ol' fashioned Basic Training. Now drop AND GIVE ME 20, pin-head!!
Comment!
But seriously, I'm ready to focus on illustration. Teach me, Obiwan.
I would love a book. I use many of your methods in my own work: http://www.robertlanedesign.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/frame-sketching.jpg
Hey Von,
I really enjoyed your presentation at one of our local AIGA events this past year in Boise. Thanks for all the fantastic work, inspiration, and great support you are for the design community. Sign me up anytime there is Vonster merch up for grabs and keep fighting the good fight!
Sir, yes sir!
I have a good handle on drawing vector illustrations but I'm always looking to learn new techniques.
Reposted from the HOWie FB group:
♥ your process and will keep on keepin' on.
One thing I'm glad you mentioned is that skill does not diminish over time.
My one question is - are you using consistency like repetition? I've been driving repetition into newbs, but if it means the same thing as consistency to you, then it's all good.
This is my pen tool. There are many like it, but this one is mine. My pen tool is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. My pen tool, without me, is useless. Without my pen tool, I am useless.
awesome video von!
Parkecreative,
Repetition and consistency are two different things IMO. You can have repetition but if the work isn't consistently well crafted and appropriate than it's just repetition of marginal output.
Consistency is to keep your systematic creative process consistent which increases quality over time and improves the craft of your work through continual applied skill.
We are on the same page, just using a different mix of lingo.
Your aggressive approach to systematic creative processes is inspiring Von, I will pass it on!
looks like a great book
I love your other books, and this will be a great companion to them. Thanks for all you do!
Can't wait to check out this book! Looks like a great read! Love your work, keep on blowing us away with your incredible talent!!
Count me in! thanks,
Cool, count me in. Thanks,
It's great to get a resource that mixes the theory of transforming hand drawings to vector illustrations with practical, step-by-step instruction. Also great to learn some tricks and tips that would take many years to pick up if you learned Illustrator on our own!
I am looking forward to diving into this book. Too often we settle for stock illustrations to cut corners. This year it's time to learn to do it myself from scratch!
Count me in. I'd like to have a copy.
Like everyone else here - I've been waiting for the launch of the new blog with a lot of excitement and have been checking at least once a week for any new posts. Imagine the thrill when I see the new post! Can't wait for the launch - and getting your book. Your posts have been a tremendous help to me. Thanks for all your work in making your blog top notch!
Let's see who will be the lucky ones. I'd like to have a copy, too. Thanks, Mr Von Glitschka!
